media release

Rocky Mount, N.C. — Nash County Public Schools (NCPS) is providing an update regarding recent threats made on social media targeting Rocky Mount Middle School and other schools outside of our district. Per the Rocky Mount Police Department, the juvenile responsible for these threats has been identified and charged with GS 14-277.6 for communicating a threat of mass violence on educational property.

To ensure the continued safety and security of our school community, there will be an increased law enforcement presence at both Rocky Mount Middle School and Edwards Elementary School on Monday, September 9. This measure is taken out of an abundance of caution to maintain a secure environment for students and staff.

Safety remains the top priority for NCPS, and any students involved in this incident or similar will face disciplinary action in accordance with the NCPS Code of Conduct. We encourage all students to report any concerns to a teacher, a trusted adult, or through the Anonymous Say Something App.

We extend our sincere gratitude to the Rocky Mount Police Department's Criminal Investigations Division for their swift and effective response, and we acknowledge the collaborative efforts of the Nash County Sheriff’s Office and the Edgecombe County Sheriff’s Office. Their thorough investigation has been crucial in ensuring the safety and security of schools across both districts.

We appreciate the community's understanding and continued support. For any further questions or concerns, please contact your school’s administration.
